Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited is a share holder owned Company who specialise in marketing all classes of livestock and carrying out all aspects of Land Agency. Wallets Marts have been marketing livestock in the Stewartry since 1856 and have occupied their present 10 acre site since 1888.
The present Company was formed in 1996 and currently lease the mart site from Wallets Marts Plc. The mart itself has been extensively modernised over the years and is recognised as the premier marketing centre within South West Scotland.
Wallets business covers a wide range of services whilst retaining live auctions as its core business. We have a deadweight marketing division trading as Galloway Primestock and a highly successful Land Agency business which trades as Wallets Rural Property Services.
Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited are official auctioneers to the Luing Cattle Society, the Galloway Cattle Society, the Belted Galloway Cattle Society, the Salers Cattle Society and the Bluefaced Leicester Sheep Association.
Board of Directors
The Board of Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited is made up of eight local business men and women as follows:
Chairman – Tom Gillespie
Tom is a well known local businessman who runs an extensive holiday park enterprise based at Brighouse Bay. He was recently awarded the Silver Thistle Award in recognition of his contribution to the development of Tourism in Scotland. He also farms at South Park, Cairniehill and Borness and is a past Chairman of Scottish Enterprise Dumfries & Galloway. Tom has served as Chairman of Wallets since joining the Board in 1990.
Vice Chairman – Robert K. Graham
Robert is well know throughout the Stewartry and further afield. He farms extensively in partnership with his wife, Moira, son Andrew and daughter, Kyla at Irelandton, Auchengassel, Mains of Twynholm and Meadowhead, Carsphairn. In and around 2001 he developed a business, RKG Landrovers, which deals exclusively in 4 wheel drive vehicles. In 2007 it won the prestigious Dealer of the Year award. Robert has been Vice Chairman since 1995.
Managing Director – Robin B. Anderson
Robin joined Wallets Marts back in 1980 and he has progressed through the ranks since then. He was appointed interim Manager in 1995 and was appointed on to the Board as Managing Director and CEO in August of the same year. Robin is a past President of the Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland and still is a council member.
Director – Tim Atkinson
Tim joined Wallets Marts in June 1999 and headed up a new trading division specialising in all aspects of Land Agency namely Wallets Rural Property Services. Tim is a fully qualified Land Surveyor, he started his working career with Harrison & Hetherington on leaving school and was with them until he joined Wallets Marts.
Non Executive Directors
Robert Dalglish -Robert joined the Board of Wallets Marts in 2002. He farms extensively in Upper Nithsdale at Burnfoot, Ulzieside and Kirkland, Kirkconnell in partnership with his wife, Jane.
Margaret Kingan – Margaret is one of the Board’s newest recruits having been co-opted in January 2009. Margaret runs a successful beef finishing enterprise at Lochhill and Overton, New Abbey in partnership with her husband, Russell and son, Alistair. Margaret is also currently a Director of RHET.
Robert McKinnel – Robert joined the Board in 1998 and and farms Garrarie, Whithorn with son, Neil and is in partnership at Palmallet, Whithorn with his eldest son, Roy.
Andrew Nelson - Andrew is a local farmer, farming Cogarth Farm at Parton where he runs 150 suckler cows and 600 breeding sheep in partnership with his father. Andrew is well known in Young Farmers circles having been actively involved at local and national levels. He is a past president of the Stewartry Show.
